The Unicorn Cup

The leading innovation challenge taught by University tutors and designed specifically for high schools.

Unicorn Cup - Summary

A 6-week, self-paced hybrid challenge, where students develop an innovative solution that creates a positive impact in their local community. To help, students receive weekly guidance and feedback from their innovation mentor- a real student studying at Sydney’s Universities.

Design thinking methodology, the entrepreneurial mindset and sustainability principles are core pillars within each weekly workshop, which will harness students’ creativity, teamwork and innovation skills.

These workshops utilize independent learning methods, meaning it is easy for teachers to implement the program on their time and make room to catch up on admin tasks. Simply play the workshop video for students and watch them complete the tasks within a period or two!

We want to provide these opportunities to all students, so the first 3 weeks of the Unicorn Cup are absolutely free.

See core details of each week below.

Activity Details: 6 Period format*

* Self paced to fit into your school schedule. Suggested 1 per week.

  • This workshop is a simple introduction to the challenge and how it works. You will create a video that introduces all your team members.

  • Innovation might not be what you think it is. You choose a real-world company and explain how it is both innovative and entrepreneurial. Hopefully, you can take some of these insights into your own bright idea!

  • It all begins with an idea! Explain your innovative idea and its positive social impact on your local community.

  • Using the feedback from Workshop 3, shift your idea with an elimination pivot to a practical, scalable solution.

  • Bring it altogether with the pitch! Create a pitch video to explain your solution and how it creates a positive social impact in your local community. This is what entrepreneurship is all about!

  • This final workshop is in-person and involves empathetic skills within stakeholder analysis and advanced communication skills for presenting in different contexts.
